The Eastern Aegean Islands group is, like the Dodecanese, much closer to Turkey than to the Greek mainland. They are composed of: Chios, Ikaria, Lesvos(Mytilini), Limnos, Thassos and Samos.
Lesvos
The island of Lesvos belongs to the N.E. Aegean Islands cluster, is located at the Aegean Sea, and is situated at a very close distance to the Turkish coastline. Lesvos covers an area of 1.630 sq. km., has a coastline of 370 km and has approximately 105.000 inhabitants.
Mytilini, the capital of the island, is outspread on seven hills and the castle at the top of the pinewood, the mansions along the waterfront and the church of Agios Therapondas at the center, prevail, enchanting the visitor. Mytilini, a town with interesting ancient history is divided in the old and the new town. The old town is a densely populated region with narrow alleys and scenic houses, while the new town has beautiful quarters with elegant mansions.
However, the beauty of this island is not a characteristic of the capital alone. Lesvos pulses with numerous settlements of unique interest and incredible charm. The scenic hamlet Eressos, the commercial center Kalloni, the traditional settlement Madamados, the historical village Mithymna, the largest hamlet Plomari, the volcanic Sigri, the coastal village Petra, the verdant settlement Papados, the traditional village Moria, the picturesque hamlet Agiassos, are only few of the magnificent destinations of the island of Lesvos.
This island is famous for producing the best ouzo of Greece and for being the land of the famous Greek female poet Sappho, who lived in the 7th century BC and wrote wonderful poems about her lesbian relationships as well as hymns, love songs and poems on various themes.
Lesvos is also the birthplace of the writer Aesop, of the philosophers Aristotle and Epicurus, of the famous poet Odysseas Elytis and of the painter Theophilos.
Apart from its rich cultural background, the island of Lesvos has a lot to offer to the visitors: amazing medieval and Ottoman architecture, impressive landscapes, beautiful beaches, nice thermal springs and an authentic, traditional Greek way of life.
The architecture of the island has also many important structures to show, such as the buildings of the old port authority, the national bank, the girl's school, Tarsi Hammam, as well as numerous churches.
Flights & Ferries to Lesvos
You can travel to the island of Lesvos from the port of Piraeus as well as from the port of Rafina by ferry or high-speed boat, while from Athens you can also travel by airplane. From the island of Lesvos, by airplane, you will have the opportunity to visit Thessaloniki, Hios and Limnos. By ferry of high-speed boat you can visit Kavala, Alexandroupoli, the Dodecanese Island cluster, the N.E. Aegean islands, Thessaloniki and Turkey.
Samos
Samos is part of the North-Eastern Aegean Islands and is located in the southern part of the group, near the Turkish coast, from which it is separated by the narrow Mykale Straits (3km wide). The island covers an area of 476 sq. km., has a coastline of 159 km and has approximately 42.000 inhabitants.
It is the most visited island of the North-Eastern Aegean but keeps its beauty and attractiveness.
Samos or Vathi, the capital and the port of the island, is outspread at the cove of a large gulf. Built amphitheatrically, this is one of the most beautiful insular towns. The neoclassical buildings and the mansions, the sacred churches, the picturesque old town with the uphill alleys and the traditional houses, create a magnificent icon.
Touring around the island of Samos, apart from the very promising capital, you will also come across various interesting settlements. Agios Konstantinos, a much-frequented traditional village, Vourliotes, a verdant village famous for the production of wine, Karlovassi, the most glorious resort of the island, Pythagorio, an ideal tourist resort, as well as Kokkari, Mytilini, Marathokambos, Pyrgos, are only few of the most interesting destinations of Samos.

Hios (Chios)
Hios belongs to the Northeastern Aegean Islands and it is located south of the island of Lesvos. It covers an area of 842 sq. km and is 153 nautical miles from Piraeus. It is the fragrant island of mastic, and historical island with medieval villages, Byzantine mansions and monasteries and ancient monuments. An island that has given us many important personalities of Greece and is known for its festivals full of tradition, history and culture.
The island was first inhabited during the Neolithic Age, around 4000 BC and according to Greek mythology it got its name by Hios, the son of Poseidon or Oceanus. This island, which is also considered to be the birthplace of Homer, reached great cultural heights, during the 18th century.
Its capital is Hios or Hora, which is also the main port of the island. The visitor can admire the beautiful houses, wander around the busy streets, the market, the port or the square and pass by the Byzantine Castle with Kara Ali's marble tomb. Other places of interest in the capital are the Korai Libray, the Archaeological Museum and several other cultural exhibitions.
Spread all over the island are medieval villages, many of which are excellently built, such as Pyrgi, an architectural painting. The inhabitants, both merchants and philosophers, are known for their hospitality and their warmth. You can experience wonderful moments while travelling around Anemona, Kabohora, Volissos, Vrontados, Karfas, Kardamyla, Mesta, Karyes and Kalamoti.

Limnos
Lemnos Greece is a wonderful holiday destination in the NE Aegean Islands, a region with deep blue seas and gorgeous beaches. Lemnos Beaches
The island of Lemnos Greece is a fantastic getaway for those who want to have fun on the sand and in the sea. There are a good selection of beautiful Lemnos beaches that have crystal-clear waters and soft sands.
In Myrina, you can swim at the lovely beach of the town, or at the nearby beaches of Romaiiko Gialo and Richa Nera. Both of these Lemnos beaches are well-organized, with sun beds, umbrellas, water sports facilities, beach bars and caf��s. Richa Nera (which literally means shallow waters) is ideal for families with small children. Their close proximity to Myrina and excellent facilities make them two of the most popular Lemnos beaches.
Close to the capital are a few exquisite Lemnos beaches. Avlonas Beach is a pristine stretch of sand with transparent water. The popular Platis Beach is a long sandy beach with powdery sand, water sports facilities, bars and tavernas.
A little further south of Plati Beach is the sandy Thanos Beach, one of the most attractive Lemnos beaches. It is surrounded by volcanic rocks and has turquoise waters. Another popular Lemnos beach is located several kilometres north of Myrina and is called Agios Ioannis Beach. There, visitors can spend endless hours swimming in clear waters and lying on soft sand that is lined with volcanic boulders. On the northern coast of Lemnos Island, you will come across the beach of Gomati. It is enclosed in a small bay and has sand dunes and glimmering waters.
Flights & Ferries to Lemnos
To reach Lemnos Island, visitors can take a ferry boat from Piraeus Port and Rafina Port, both located in greater Athens, and Thessaloniki Port. Ferry boats to Lemnos are quite frequent, although they make stops at various islands in the Aegean before reaching Lemnos ( Limnos). We recommend reserving a seat in the ferry boat in advance, especially when travelling by ferry to Lemnos in the high summer tourist season. You may also want to book a cabin, as the ferry boat trip to Lemnos is fairly long. The rates for ferry tickets to Lemnos depend on the season.
There are direct flights to Lemnos Airport from Athens Airport and from Thessaloniki Airport. There are also frequent charter flights to Lemnos from the UK and other European countries.
THASSOS Island
On the southeastern side of the gulf of Kavala lies Thassos, a magnificent insular resort of Macedonia, which covers an area of 380 sq. km., has a coastline of 115 km and has 13.500 inhabitants. Thassos (or Thasos) is situated in the north Aegean Sea. It is the northernmost island in the Aegean region and is just off the coastline of the Greek mainland. This island is part of the Kavala prefecture. Thassos is situated about 10 kilometres to the southeast of the Macedonian seaport of Kavala.
At the island of Thassos, which has an organized tourist substructure, you will find mountainous and coastal landscapes of unique natural beauty as well as cosmopolitan and secluded settlements that shall impress you. Thassos or Limenas, the capital, is a scenic small town with white tile-roofed houses and the famous ancient town. Theologos, one of the oldest and most beautiful villages, Limenaria, a popular coastal village, Panagia, the former traditional capital, Potos, one of the most amazing resorts, are some of the places that you should definitely visit.
The island of Thassos was first inhabited by the Phoenicians. During Balkan Wars, in 1914, Thassos Island came under Greek control. Before that, Thassos had a turbulent history of wars and battles between different regimes including the Athenians, the Persians, the Lacedaemonians, the Romans, the Latins and the Turks. They all tried to control Thassos.
While in Limenas, which is also referred to as Thassos Town, one can have a glimpse of the numerous ruins on which the modern city was built, which speaks for itself about the rich history of this region.
Thassos does not feature on the major ferry routes, but has a regular ferry service from the Greek mainland. There are quite a few ferry services to and from Kavala and Skala Prinos, which is the west coast port of the island. There are numerous hydrofoils connecting Kavala and Limenas, the capital on the east coast of Thassos. The journey takes about 45 minutes.
