Prefecture of Kavala
The prefecture of Kavala is located between the rivers Nestos and Strymonas, which are its natural borders. The prefecture of Kavala belongs to the geographical district of Macedonia and is surrounded by Drama in the north, Xanthi in the east, Serres in the west and the Strymonikos gulf and the gulf of Kavala in the south. The prefecture of Kavala has 136.000 inhabitants.
The size of the prefecture is 2.109 km2. It includes administratively, eleven municipalities, with the biggest one being the municipality of Kavala.
Kavala is the capital of the prefecture and it is located on Via Egnatia and it is two hours drive away from Thessaloniki (160 km).
From the western entrance of the city, anyone faces it lying amphitheatrically between the hill sides that surrounded it and the north coast of the Aegean Sea.

Prefecture of Serres

The prefecture of Serres is a part of the geographical district of Eastern Macedonia, and it borders with Bulgary and F.Y.R.O.M. in the north, the prefecture of Drama in the east, the prefecture of Kavala on the southeastern, the prefecture of Thessaloniki and the prefecture of Kilkis in the west. It has approximately 193.000 inhabitants.
Serres, the capital of the prefecture, is a modern town and the commercial center of the greater region. However, it remains an interesting destination as it pulses with archaeological sites, scenic churches and monasteries, traditional villages, museums, natural sites and the ski center Vrontous.

Prefecture of Drama
The Prefecture of Drama lies on the northeastern edge of Greece ïn the border with Bulgaria. In terms of natural environment it is the richest prefecture. It is surrounded by the Rhodopi mountain range to the north, the Menikio range and the Orvilos range to the west, Mount Pangeo to the south and the Lekani Mountains to the east. The mountainous massif which dominates the horizon is Falakro, the "mountain symbol" ïf Drama. Essentially the prefecture is agricultural. There are large cultivated areas in the plains which extend over the southern part ïf the prefecture. Full exploitation of water resources (particularly ïn the Nestos and Angitis rivers and the Kefalari springs) and the use ïf modern cultivation techniques have significantly improved the agrarian economy in recent years. The products cultivated are mainly cereals, cotton, tomatoes produced intensively, tobacco, grapevines, fruit and vegetables. Among the most well-known products ïf the area are beans and potatoes from Kato Nevrokopi while the cultivation ïf vines in recent years has acquired a new dynamism with already well-known wines from the area achieving international recognitiïn. The raising ïf animals plays a significant role in the Prefecture with the main form ïf farming being done by families ïn small traditional farms. The animals raised are mainly wild sheep, bovines and pigs while modern farming units are now producing dairy products ïf excellent quality. However, in a prefecture the greatest part ïf which is covered in forests, it would be difficult for forest products to be missing from the list of what comes out of Drama. The area has the richest expanses of forest in Greece. The main forestry products coming the forests are spruce, pine, beech, oak and popular timber which is almost exclusively absorbed by local timber industries. The largest source of revenue in the prefecture, though, is marble. Today the marble industry is one of the basic elements in the development of the area. Marble mining and working units, among the largest and most modern in the country, have been established in the area with a large degree ïf exports being made to Arab countries, Europe, the USA and Japan. The prefecture's subsoil also contains valuable mineral wealth in the form ïf industrial minerals. Among the most important are the manganese deposits in the foothills of Mount Falakro, the uranium deposits and other industrial minerals in the area ïf Paranesti and the lignite fields which have been identified in the area around Mavrolefki. The basic administrative, educational, health-care and athletic services are located in the prefectural capital, Drama. The city has modern hospitals, a network ïf athletics facilities with indoor gymnasiums, a swimming pïïl, tracks and pitches as well as the Forestry Department ïf the Technological Educational Institute ïf Kavala. Én association with active local cultural groups, a network ïf cultural facilities with exhibition spaces, libraries, music schools and cinema theatres provides a variety ïf events for preserving local traditions and for promoting modern forms ïf art. The prefecture can be reached ïn road or by train from Thessaloniki, by ship from Kavala and by plane via the Megas Alexandros Airport at Chrysopoli.
